PATRICK
Jacqueline Patrick says she wouldn't
be alive today if it weren't for a
groundbreaking clinical trial at BC Cancer.
After being diagnosed with stage IV
breast cancer in 2013, her oncologist
recommended she take part in an
experimental drug program spearheaded
by Dr. Asif Shaikh at BC Cancer's
Abbotsford Centre.

I feel good about

the fact that I may
be a small part of a new
treatment that may
extend the length and
quality of life of future
cancer patients.

The trial looks at the impact of hormonal
treatments on postmenopausal women with
stage IV breast cancer, comparing a new,
injectable hormonal treatment option with
a standard option taken orally by patients.
It's one of many trials being conducted
at BC Cancer as part of a concerted effort
to advance cancer treatment across
the province.
And for Jacqueline, it's made all the
difference.
"The cancer should have taken my life if
I had not been on this trial," she says.

FIRST-IN-CANADA RADIOTHERAPY
TREATMENT ARRIVES IN VANCOUVER
VERO, the most advanced radiotherapy technology in the world, was
installed at BC Cancer's Vancouver Centre this year.
VERO focuses radiation on a central
target (e.g., a tumour) while sparing
surrounding healthy tissues and organs.

This method allows for delivery of
radiation to tumours that have not
previously been targetable through
radiation therapy, giving new hope
to patients diagnosed with the most
hard-to-treat cancers: lung, liver,
pancreas, kidney and brain.
