INNOVATIVE STUDY IN PANCREATIC CANCER

6

$

BC Cancer's Pancreatic Genomics ("PanGen") program uses genomics to
identify unique subtypes of pancreatic cancer. The initiative profiles a patient's
DNA and RNA to create individualized treatment.
Led by Dr. Daniel Renouf, PanGen is generously supported through the annual
Glotman Simpson Cypress Challenge. In its nine-year history, the challenge
has raised more than $2 million to advance research and care for individuals
facing pancreatic cancer. Because
of Challenge donors, the PanGen
program is fully up and running.
This year's funds-more than
$400,000 raised-will help
Dr. Renouf and his team better
understand how pancreatic cancer
develops and progresses. One
of the key areas of research going
forward will be potential screening
methods to catch the disease earlier.

SPECIALIZED CARE WHERE YOU LIVE
Because of donors and attendees of the 2016 Inspiration
Gala, patients with rare and hard-to-treat cancers
will soon receive specialized care, such as NETRACER
(an approach to better detect and treat cancers), right
here in B.C. Patients just like Ann-Britt Everett.

I could not be more
thrilled that
such specialized and
effective treatment
will soon be available
to patients much
closer to home.
- Ann-Britt Everett, patient who
travelled to Denmark for her NETs
cancer care, away from her family

A spectacular $3.05 MILLION was raised at the
annual black-tie event to support the launch of
this first-in-Canada program.

MILLION
to bolster Dr. Kim Chi's
Translational Genomics
Program in prostate cancer.
This will help BC Cancer
recruit leading talent to
scale up the identification
of new drug targets.

NEW GENETIC TESTS BECOME
STANDARD OF CARE IN B.C.
The OncoPanel and Myeloid Panel are
clinical tests now available across B.C. as
provincial diagnostic tools. This means a
more personalized approach to treatment
for thousands of cancer patients. More
than 2,000 B.C. cancer patients will
be eligible for the OncoPanel,
and more than 600 people will
be eligible for the Myeloid
Panel each year.
Both panels can detect
multiple mutations in several
genes associated with solid
or blood-based cancers,
respectively. These are the
first gene panels to be available
province-wide and as part of
standard cancer care in Canada.
The panels were developed by clinicians
and scientists at BC Cancer-with significant
support from Foundation donors.
