T

he Emergency Department staff at Salina Regional
Health Center was excited to find out that for the
second year in a row, Salina Regional was named one
of America's Best Hospitals for Emergency Care by
the Women's Choice Award®, an advocacy group that helps
women consumers and their families identify the best in
healthcare and other industries.
The methodology for the America's Best Hospitals for
Emergency Care award is unique in that it combines federal
government survey results (the Hospital Consumer Assessment
of Healthcare Providers and Systems) with primary research
about women's healthcare preferences. The award recognizes
excellence in emergency care based on time patients spent in
the emergency department, including:
DTime to admission
DTime from admission to room
DDoor to diagnosis
Criteria for selecting Salina Regional Health Center as one
of America's best also included the average time before outpatients with chest pain or a possible heart attack received
an electrocardiogram, and the average time patients with
broken bones had to wait before getting pain medication.
The Women's Choice
organization assessed
3,500 hospitals nationally; those who ranked
in the top 10 percent
for wait times and
other factors important
to women received
the recognition.

The award is especially significant given that long waits
and high crowding can have negative consequences, including
patients leaving without receiving medical treatment,
longer overall length of hospital stay and an increase in
mortality rates.
"Emergency departments can be very stressful
environments, particularly for the elderly or a mother with a
sick or injured child," says Delia Passi, founder and CEO of
the Women's Choice Award. "Women make over 80 percent
of healthcare decisions and want to be confident that they
know which emergency departments in their communities
will take care of their loved ones quickly and with the best
possible care."
Salina Regional Health Center is one of 320 award recipients,
representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards
for emergency care in the U.S.
Kathy Sturm, director of the Emergency Department at
Salina Regional, is ecstatic about earning the America's Best
Hospital for Emergency Care designation. "The Emergency
Department staff and physicians are so deserving of this award.
They come to work every day and give it their all to take care
of our patients and families," she says. 1
