"What changes as we age is the distance between
the ridges, but the pattern of ridges remains the same,"
Yarnell says.
Footprints have always been taken rather than a fingerprint because babies tend to clench their hands early on; trying to pry the hand open could cause discomfort or injury for
the infant, plus their hands are very small.

Gold Standard for Security
CertaScan Technologies worked closely with the National
Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to
develop this digital system that not only meets NCMEC
guidelines, but is considered the new "gold standard" for
ensuring infant security.
CertaScan exceeded the guidelines by digitally capturing
the baby's footprints, security photo and mom's fingerprints.
This links mom to baby and enables a digital, searchable function that offers precise identification to find and match prints,
unlike old paper prints that fade and are often unclear.
Patient satisfaction improves as parents feel more safe and
secure knowing their baby can be precisely identified in the
event of an emergency. 1

Sara Allen, R.N., scans the footprints of newborn River
Sherrer on the new CertaScan system. Baby's first
footprints are now electronically scanned, rather than
using the old method of messy ink pads.

Who Has Access?
When a newborn footprint is taken in the hospital,
it is loaded into a fully secure database that can be
retrieved only by the hospital where the footprint is
taken and by the parents of the newborn. Access to
the database requires a password.
