Your Weight
Questions,
Answered

You've been eating all your life, so why is managing
a healthy weight still so complicated?

F

or many people, losing weight is a lifelong struggle.
"Losing weight is not easy, but it is possible," says
Crystal Bertrand, a registered and licensed dietitian
with WellPlan, a service available through Salina
Regional Health Center's COMCARE family medicine clinics.
"But there is no one-size-fits-all solution."

The first step is understanding how successful weight loss
works. Ada D. Stewart, M.D., a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians, is here to
answer some of the most common weight questions.

Q

I seem to gain weight easier than
I lose it. Why is that?

Metabolism converts the food you eat into energy,
so it is a key factor in weight gain. People with
slower metabolisms might gain weight more easily than others do. You might even feel as though you gain weight just by
looking at a piece of cake.
But a slow metabolism could also be a sign of a more serious condition, such as thyroid problems and diabetes. If
you think you have a slow metabolism, talk to your doctor and get tested.
If your report comes back clear, a lack of exercise
might be the culprit behind your metabolic slowdown.
"Couch potatoes have lower metabolisms," Stewart
says. The remedy? Add more exercise into your day.
Physical activity doesn't just burn calories while
you're working out; it can also boost your metabolism,
so you're burning more calories around the clock.
Remember, there are no magic foods that will
boost your metabolism. Foods such as green tea or
chili peppers might give you a temporary lift, but they
won't make a difference long term.

For one, genetics play a part in body weight.
One study found that more than 127 genes could have a
connection to obesity. Your friend might simply be genetically predisposed to weigh less.
