Am I Doing This Right?
Keep your workouts injury-free with proper form

F

orm is important when it comes to exercising-one
wrong move, and you could seriously injure yourself. But it can be hard to tell when you're doing it
wrong. "You don't see yourself exercising. An exercise
coach can watch or demonstrate exercises done correctly,"
says Gordon Walker, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at Meeker
Memorial. "It really does help to do the exercises correctly."
Other than an exercise coach, Katherine Dec, M.D., president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine,
offers these solutions to common exercise problems.
PROBLEM

Improper gait. Often a problem for runners, gait issues

DSolution: Make sure you understand which muscles each

exercise targets and how you should be manipulating your
body. If you work out at a gym, ask a trainer for clarification.
PROBLEM

The wrong footwear. Athletic shoes are designed to
support your body for a specific activity. Basketball shoes
can withstand the quick starts and stops on the court, while
running shoes help cushion the repetitive steps of a jog.
DSolution: Choose shoes designed for your preferred activity, and your body will get the support it needs. Remember,
replace your footwear regularly as it gets worn. 1

can cause foot, knee and other problems.
DSolution: Mix whole-body strength and flexibility training into your exercise routine. "Weak hip abductors or other
imbalances can trigger gait problems," Dec says.
PROBLEM

Missteps. Missteps can happen when you're not aware of
the ground and your feet land in a way that stresses your feet,
knees or hips.
DSolution: You can't always prevent an awkward landing
from a misstep, but you can-and should-give yourself time
to recover from a resulting injury.
PROBLEM

Lifting weights with improper form. At minimum,
the wrong form could mean you're training the wrong muscles,
but it could also cause a serious injury.
