ike a beacon in the Nevada desert, the Las
Vegas Strip is undeniably attractive. But
for those with an itch to see more, there's
plenty to do outside of this entertainment
hub, says Erna B., general manager at Hilton
Grand Vacations Club on Paradise and
an area resident for 23 years. About 10 miles
west of the Strip is Summerlin, one of Erna's
favorite spots.
"It's a neighborhood that keeps expanding,
and one with a very nice layout. Downtown
Summerlin is an outdoor mall" with a range
of shopping and dining options, Erna says.
"Summerlin is also where the brand-new
Las Vegas Ballpark opened in April. It's next to
the practice facilities for the Golden Knights,
our ice hockey team. During the season, you
can see them practice. The ice also has open
skate hours. That's a different experience:
when it's 100 or more degrees out and you
can go ice skating in Las Vegas.
"If you are an outdoorsy person and
like rock climbing or hiking, Summerlin is
only about 5 miles from the entrance of
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
Area. It's stunning," Erna says. "Once in the
conservation area, there's Spring Mountain
Ranch State Park. They even have outdoor
theater during the summer."
