grown into a $4.2 trillion-a-year industry,
according to the 2018 Global Wellness
Economy Monitor, and it has infiltrated
the world of travel. The number of people
planning wellness vacations has doubled
since 2017, and wellness travel now makes
up 17 percent of tourism revenue. The
United States is the biggest backer of
wellness travel, accounting for 36 percent

When hotel gyms started to become standard, it was
usually a room with a treadmill, an elliptical and a
stack of weights. That's no longer the case. Not only
do many properties have state-of-the-art facilities
with personal trainers, group classes and cutting-edge
equipment, but they also sometimes offer equipment
rentals. We all know how bulky snorkels can be;
thanks to wellness travel, you no longer need to
sacrifice suitcase space for a swim session.
Properties are also investing in fitness offerings
outside of the gym. In addition to bike-share
programs from New York to Tokyo, hotel bikes have
become a popular amenity and are available at select
HGV properties such as The Charter Club of Marco
Beach. Prefer to sightsee on foot? Hiking excursions
are offered at a variety of resorts, such as Hilton
Grand Vacations Club at MarBrisa.

Consider exercise a new way to explore your destination. Biking through the
mountains, walking on the beach or hiking a forest trail are all great ways to
get active while experiencing a new landscape.

The exploding wellness market has

As people continue to adopt healthier habits
in general, they want to carry them over to their
vacations. That also goes for business travelers, who
want to integrate healthy eating, fitness and mindbody balance into their trips. The wellness tourism
industry is evolving with demand, making it easier to
incorporate wellness into all types of travel.
Even airlines are jumping on the trend. Menus are
getting healthier, a few airlines have installed new
air systems to help prevent the spread of viruses,
and some are working with circadian lighting to try
to prevent jet lag. Meanwhile at airports, spas, yoga
rooms, nap pods, gyms, meditation spaces and areas
with more natural light and greenery are popping up.
Travelers want to come home with more than great
photos-they want mental and physical health perks
that will last longer than an uptick in Instagram
likes. This explains why resorts, hotels and spas have
embraced a surge of wellness programming beyond
just having massages available. Now it's about having
neuroscientists on hand for sleep assessments and
shamans on call for spiritual cleansing. There are
getaways dedicated to themes like nature immersion,
weight loss and sugar detox, and retreats for divorce,
menopause, fertility and silence.
But you don't have to dedicate your vacation to
wellness to reap the benefits. You can simply extend
your wellness goals or localize your wellness activities
to your travel destination. Explore the following
aspects of wellness travel and find ways to integrate
them into your next Hilton Grand Vacations getaway.
