vacation memories from Italy

told my husband years ago, "If a property ever opens in Italy, we're
buying it." Sure enough, it came up, we bought it, and now we go
almost every year.
Everything we wanted, the people at the property were able to
give us-restaurant recommendations, local markets, arranging tours,
you name it. We were floored by the cooking class. You can actually
have a cooking class in your room if you want, but we went up to this
farmhouse. All the recipes were wonderful, and we've made them at
home too. I made the apple cake for Christmas this year. We stayed in
touch with a woman from the cooking school, and when she
told me her olive oil from that year was available, I bought
20 tins! I'm always bringing back everyday things like
crackers and 00 flour, a type of finely ground flour
that's good for making pasta and pizza crusts.
My husband laughs at me for bringing back
so many groceries, but even just going to the
grocery store there is an experience.

Spinetta serve great wine. We also enjoy Podere
la Chiesa, which is new and is starting to host music
too. Most wineries offer food, and they could get away
with just cheese and crackers, but most of the time it's real
food, and it's always delicious. As is the wine itself! There's a winery
we keep returning to, and last time they apologized to us for having raised
their prices, saying, "The Americans won't buy a wine if it's too cheap"-
that made us laugh.
The property is so calming, so relaxing-so perfect. We'd sit outside at
night, and people would walk by and we'd say, "Come here, you have to
try this cheese," and we'd tell them about the winery we'd visited. It's so
comfortable there that everybody feels a little bit like family. I remember
looking out at the scenery one night, drinking local wine, eating local
cheese, and we looked at each other and said, "Wouldn't it be great to just
live here?" It's hard to describe, because you can't put magic into words.
