NEXT-GENERATION
INTERNET

O

ne of the many conference
panels at CES 2016 was
the "Business Impact from
the Internet's Move to IPv6." The
panel featured industry experts
from Verizon Wireless, Facebook,
Comcast and American Registry for
Internet Numbers (ARIN), the body
responsible for allocating Internet
addresses to organizations in North
America. The discussion covered
various topics, from data showing
enhanced performance for IPv6enabled mobile Facebook users,
to ARIN's point that the older IPv4
technology no longer covered "the
whole Internet."

At root is the transition from IPv4 to IPv6,
respectively the old and current versions of the core
addressing system for the Internet as a whole. No
matter what the service-Web page, audio stream,
short-form video, news feed, etc.-if it is carried
over the Internet, there will be addresses from
these two versions associated with it. The addresses
determine where the information comes from and
where it is headed.
But the Internet is running out of room. That's
the venerable IPv4 showing its age, with a paltry
4.3 billion addresses, not even enough to cover all
the smartphones in the world. IPv6, on the other
hand, can handle upwards of 340 trillion-trilliontrillion distinct addresses. It's the only way to
deploy the tens of billions of devices expected in the
Internet of Things in a few years.
The deployment for IPv6 has been ongoing for
some years. This study is a quantitative look at the
penetration of IPv6 in the home.
The top 10 categories of connected devices
account for 94.7 percent of all devices shipping in
consumer channels, as forecast by CTA for the year
ending December 2015. In other words, this list
accounts for about 19 out of every 20 devices going
to consumers.
So, which of these devices are IPv6-enabled
(including "dual-stack," the preferred configuration,
which includes both IPv6 and the older IPv4)?
Starting at the top of the list, it is a good news
story. All smartphones are already enabled with
IPv6. In fact, T-Mobile's network is exclusively
IPv6, so if you're surfing the Web or watching
