First Russian Microprocessor Set to Debut
Baikal Electronics-a Russian fabless semiconductor company that develops and markets
energy-efficient processors and SoCs-will begin
production on the Baikal-T1, the first Russian-made
chip for commercial use. The design of the BaikalT1 is based on existing commercial IP Cores from
Imagination Technologies and ARM Holdings,
and the chip will be used in networking-related
applications, including wireless routers and home
gateways. According to Baikal Electronics, more
than 100 companies have placed orders, with
more than 20 of those companies being foreign.
By 2020, the company expects to surpass sales of
five million chips.

Netflix Launches Service in Russia
at CES 2016
Netflix flipped the switch on its service for
Russia during the company's keynote at CES
2016. "You are witnessing the birth of a new
global Internet TV network," Reed Hastings,
CEO of Netflix told attendees as the service
went live in Russia and 129 other countries.
Following the launch of the streaming service,
the limited library and high price of Netflix
in the country could be a major challenge
to uptake, according to The Moscow Times.
At launch, Russia Netflix offered roughly 720
movies and television series, compared to
5,700 titles available in the U.S., due to licensing agreements. Also presenting a challenge,
much of the content does not include Russian
language subtitles.

Russia Considers Tax on
Foreign Tech Companies
According to German Klimenko, the Kremlin's
adviser on the Internet, Russia is considering
a tax on technology services provided by foreign companies in the country. What some are
calling a 'Google Tax' would affect companies
like Google, Apple and Facebook. "I'd like to
know how much Google earns on the territory
of Russia and add 18 percent to it," Klimenko
told Russian News Service radio in February.
Klimenko's comments came days after he
suggested that services including Google,
Facebook and other social media companies
could be blocked in Russia if they do not comply with a law enacted last summer requiring companies to locate facilities that store
Russian data inside the country.
