CTA ALLIANCE COMMUNITY:
KHRONOS GROUP
T
he Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™ supports the work of industry
alliances formed to advance specific technologies. This supports our mission to
grow the industry. This year we launched the CTA Alliance Community with a
kickoff reception at CES. Throughout the year we will help industry professionals discover, track and engage with industry alliances, and help alliances connect with one
another and the rest of the industry. Starting with this issue of i3 we will highlight the
activities of a specific industry alliance.
The Khronos Group
The Khronos Group is a not-for-profit memberfunded consortium that creates royalty-free open
API (application programming interface) standards for authoring and acceleration of parallel
computing, graphics, dynamic media, computer
vision and sensor processing on various platforms
and devices. APIs are sets of tools that computer
programmers use to build programs. For example
an API might consist of tools for driving a graphics
processor, processing the input from a camera sensor, or orchestrating how to use parallel processing
in a computer system.
Parallel processing is a type of computing where
a task is broken down into several subtasks, all
of which are processed at the same time by the

computer using different computer resources. For
example, multi-core or multi-processor computers have multiple cores or processors that each can
perform calculations at the same time called parallel computing.
Computer vision refers to the ability of a computer to reconstruct, interpret and understand
3D scenes from camera inputs, and to essentially
mimic the abilities of humans to perceive and
understand their environment.
One of Khronos' latest projects is called Vulkan, a
next-generation standard API for efficiently driving
graphics processors that is gathering lots of interest among game developers. Khronos says Vulkan
will enable thinner drivers requiring less processor
overhead resulting in graphics intensive games and
