Cinematic catastrophe flicks come in many
different forms: natural or environmental disasters
(earthquakes, tornados and hurricanes), accidents
(ocean liners capsizing) and rampaging monsters
(Godzilla, killer sharks, etc.). To date, however, the
film studios have not produced a scary blockbuster
based on the horror of failed technology, such as
what would happen if our communication networks
ground to a halt due to overwhelming demand for
wireless services.
Perhaps Hollywood's scriptwriters should think
about it because the lack of sufficient wireless
bandwidth could bring about a tech-based
disaster scenario-and possibly within the next five
years. With wireless voice and data access now a
fundamental part of our everyday lives, almost on a
par with electricity, gas and water delivery, as more
Americans use smartphones, tablets, laptops, and
other devices to browse the Web, download video
and run applications this increased wireless usage is
straining the capacity of the airwaves.
Cisco's 2016 Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global
Mobile Data Traffic Forecast outlines the scope of
the problem. The study notes that in place of Webbrowsing on one or two devices-requiring less than
5 megabits per second-we now have streaming video
and multiple internet-connected devices consuming
more than 100 megabits per second.
Cisco predicts that by 2020:
* Mobile IP traffic will reach an annual run rate of
367 exabytes, up from 44 exabytes in 2015. (One
exabyte is equivalent to one billion gigabytes).
* There will be 11.6 billion mobile-ready devices and
connections, nearly four billion more than in 2015.
* There will be 5.5 billion global mobile users, up
from 4.8 billion in 2015.
* 55 percent of the total mobile data traffic
will be offloaded from cellular to Wi-Fi or small
cell networks.
