Technology Improves
Aging Experience
M
any charities working in the area of aging focus on
the poorest, hungriest and most isolated populations.
Another side to aging involves maintaining freedom
and independence and building on accumulated experiences. The CTA Foundation (CTAF) has built programs that
address both ends of the aging spectrum.
One CTAF grant recipient, Selfhelp
Virtual Senior Center, serves low income,
homebound seniors. One participant, Mr.
Cheng, requires a motorized wheelchair
to get around. Because of isolation he
would wander the halls of his apartment
building until his wheelchair battery was
depleted and he would require assistance
to get back home. Once set up on the
Virtual Senior Center he quickly became
an active user and bonded with fellow
users nationwide. "Before, I was so bored
and lonely in my apartment. I wanted to
get out, but it's hard for me to do so," he
shares. "Now, I have friends who I can visit
with in my apartment. It's so wonderful.
Thank you, thank you!"
Another program, the OATS Digital
Entrepreneurship program, helps
older adults use technology to generate
income. For example, they helped one
participant at risk of being evicted from
her apartment, who now is a top editor
of a major online freelance site.
The CTA/CTA Foundation Active
Aging report and the recent Outthink
Aging report with IBM, finds there is
more to aging than frailty. The CTA
Foundation is proud to support programs that enable all older adults to
learn new technologies that fit a healthy
lifestyle, help maintain independence and
combat isolation. The foundation supports programs from San Diego to New
York, offering classes and assistance on
technologies. As an industry, technology
is improving lives of people across the
world. The CTA Foundation helps those
in the greatest need, while also enabling
opportunities for using technology for
everyone, regardless of age or disability. n
