websites, as well as security concerns for
smart homes and smart cities;
l The Trusted Computing Group discussed how devices become trusted and
can make the IoT more secure.
Technicolor's Mark Turner led a
discussion on augmented, virtual,
mixed reality and 360° video with Amy
Wolverton of HTC America Inc. and
Daniel Perry of Owlchemy Labs, and
the important differences with regard
to the user's experience. Topics included
bandwidth requirements and networking
needs to support a truly immersive VR
experience in streaming content. Gaming
and video were discussed as well as AR/
VR in training, education, medicine and

Day Two

 A

ustin, TX was the site of CTA's Fall Technology &
Standards Forum, sponsored by Gibson Brands Inc. and
LG/Zenith. The Forum brings together CTA's standards
committees, industry engineers and thought leaders
to develop new ideas that keep consumer tech moving forward.

CTA hosted the U.S. Department
of Commerce's National
Telecommunications and Information
Administration (NTIA), who met to
share views on security upgradability and
patching, and to establish goals for future
NTIA-convened multi-stakeholder discussions on IoT security. More than 100
professionals attended panels on health
and fitness technology, security of the
Internet of Things, and augmented and
virtual reality (VR).
CTA's Health and Fitness Technology
Subcommittee also published its first
two standards, ANSI/CTA/NSF-2052.1,
Definitions and Characteristics for
Wearable Sleep Monitors, and ANSI/CTA2056, Physical Activity Monitoring for
Fitness Wearables: Step Counting.
Definitions and Characteristics for
Wearable Sleep Monitors defines terms

for describing sleep states and indicates
the functionality required in consumer
devices measuring sleep behavior. Physical
Activity Monitoring for Fitness Wearables:
Step Counting describes a measurement
procedure and performance criteria for
consumer step-counting devices.

A new cybersecurity assessment tool for
CTA members based on the Building
Security in Maturity Model (BSIMM)
was launched to combat increasing cyber
threats. CTA partnered with Cigital to
help companies improve their software
security initiatives and compare their
systems against industry peers. Dr. Chris
Eschbach of Valencell led a discussion
on how accurate biometric sensor data
is an absolute requirement for a compelling user experience to drive positive
health and fitness changes. Dr. Matthew
Diamond of Misfit/Fossil Group led a
panel addressing how technology can
enhance mindfulness as innovative
products come to market. n
