From the CEO

President Trump

 T

he tech industry didn't give much support to candidate Trump. But they also didn't
have much enthusiasm for Secretary Clinton, especially compared to President Obama.
In fact, President Obama was great for tech. He was the first Democratic president in
decades to fight Hollywood when he came out against the internet-killing SOPA-PIPA
legislation rushing through Congress. He took on the trial lawyers by supporting policies restricting
patent trolls. He fought for additional spectrum. He said he supported highly skilled immigration
(but killed any chance of it by insisting it be part of a big immigration reform package).

Business
leaders from
tech and
other groups
meeting with
Trump have
stressed
the need to
compete
globally.

MARCH/APRIL 2017

But while he was good for tech, he was
bad for business. Obamacare gave us new
regulations. Dodd Frank made us track
where basic minerals we used came from,
and higher taxes and more rules squelched
economic growth.
But now we have a new president who
can lower corporate taxes, cut rules and
improve the business climate. He can also
help to drive an internet age infrastructure
bill, driverless car technology and 5G.
However, he may want new import taxes
and is not keen on immigration. But overall,
the election of President Trump along with
a Republican Congress should be a plus for
the economy and business.
Business leaders from tech and other
groups meeting with Trump have stressed
the need to compete globally. Makers of auto
and consumer technology rely on NAFTA
and other agreements to fuel both imports

and exports. I can't imagine that imposing
new import fees would be good for the
average American consumer. And discouraging people from coming to the U.S. will
hurt our business-based economy, especially
travel and tourism.
We are entering unchartered waters
with a strong president, and a Republican
Congress eager to assist and a Democratic
minority swearing to resist. But being in
the tech industry means, if nothing else,
we respect and adjust to disruption.
So hold on, be flexible and be willing
to contact your member of Congress.
