Editor's Note

On the
Threshold of
Great Change
CES® 2017 wrapped as the largest show in consumer
technology history-spanning over 2.6 million NSF of
exhibit space with 4,000 exhibitors and 180,000 executives
from business, government, entertainment and the automotive industries. We share some of the energy, excitement,
passion and show highlights in our post-CES coverage
including a few of the entrepreneurs in Eureka Park.

T

ech advances are transforming businesses and the global
economy at an accelerated
pace. One theme talked
about at CES is how artificial intelligence
(AI) will change lives. AI will fuel innovation in self-driving cars and teach them
to maneuver efficiently. And virtually
all of the new robots featured at CES
had some sort of AI embedded in
them. These personal assistants are also
demonstrating an enhanced ability to
understand voice-based requests. Read
i3's A Tech to Watch to learn more.
Voice-activated technologies were
pervasive from Amazon Echo to Google
Home - each working to integrate voice
recognition across countless product
verticals. Today, voice recognition is
becoming the common operating system
for diverse connected objects, as Shawn
DuBravac notes in The Economist.
We also take a look at how 4K
gaming has been lifted by an influx of
4K PC monitors from companies like
Dell, Samsung and BenQ. Now the
console business is following suit. We
also view the sharing economy model.
PricewaterhouseCoopers envisions that
by 2025, shared services will generate
$335 billion worldwide revenues in five
major sectors (lodging, transportation,
staffing, music and lending), up from about
$15 billion in 2013. The app-driven sharing
economy is altering the way we live.

And President and Managing
Partner of SVS | Specialty Technologies,
Gary Yacoubian, shares his passion for
audio and his experiences as former CTA
Chairman in Innovator. He has unique
insights on the industry, having seen it
from the retail and manufacturing sides.
On the policy front, CTA President
and CEO Gary Shapiro shares his thoughts
about encouraging U.S. innovation to
thrive, based on his testimony before
a Senate Commerce Committee on
February 1. He also spoke with Justin Kintz,
Uber's head of U.S. public affairs about
the company's investment and interest
in self-driving technology. Mark your
calendars for CTA Tech Week to be held
April 4-5 in Washington, DC.
And to understand the concept of
a smart city and what it will take to make
it a reality, read CTA's latest research
created in partnership with United Parcel
Service (UPS) entitled The Evolution of
Smart Cities and Connected Communities.

or entrepreneur that you would like to
