JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

The world is becoming increasingly urbanized.
In 1960, one-third of Americans lived in cities.
Today it's roughly half. By 2050, it will likely be
two-thirds according to CTA's 2017 study,
The Rise and Growth of Smart Cities in Europe.
In 1990, there were just 10 megacities across
the globe. By 2030, this is expected to rise to 41,
according to the United Nations. Megacities are
urban areas with a population of more than 10 million. Cities are serving more people, dealing with
more vehicles and deliveries, and because of
this, they also will need more water, electricity,
broadband and clean air.
To meet this demand, cities are getting "smarter."
They are using sensors to time traffic lights based on
vehicles and soon will do the same with pedestrian
traffic. They are creating options for shared vehicles,
including cars and bicycles. They are experimenting
with self-driving vehicles and pedestrian-only areas.
They are also saving energy with smart buildings.
Another strategy is creating mini smart city communities. They are distributing tourist dollars in the
city by allowing home sharing services like Airbnb
and Home Away. To entice Gen Y to move to cities
without having to buy a car, they are embracing
sharing economy services like Lyft and Uber. They
are also encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation through incubators and shared workspaces.
Smart cities are making government services easier to access using apps and the internet. They are
informing citizens in real time of transportation
services, closures, options, events, air quality and
emergencies. And they are aggregating citizen data.
Thanks to low cost sensors, innovative companies
and forward-thinking public officials, the world
is awash with smart city experiments. Europe is
especially progressive, according to CTA's report,

with Amsterdam, Barcelona, Manchester and Paris
being especially innovative. (Not coincidentally, we
will have significant events in three of those cities
this year). Find the report at CTA.tech/research.
Given the shift in urban development and technology driving it all, CES 2018 will host its first
Smart Cities at CES - a dedicated exhibit area with
full conference programming. Smart Cities will be
located at the Westgate and will cover smart cities
topics and technologies including: artificial intelligence, data analytics, energy and electric grids, governance and policies, health care, public safety and
intelligent transportation. Bringing together the
technologies, solutions, players and audiences in the
smart cities sector it will feature companies such as
Itron, Ericsson, EV-Box, Fybr and Cognata showing
the latest in 5G, mobile, sensors and more. CES is
the only place to see the entire connected ecosystem
at work in one place. Some of the other exhibitors
showcasing Smart Cities technologies at CES
include Bosch, Ford, IBM and Panasonic.
This is just the beginning of a huge transformation creating amazing business opportunities. 5G is
coming and its rich bandwidth will reduce latency,
allow a fast data stream and incentivize new services. Combined with low cost sensors, deep data
analytics and artificial intelligence, 5G will be the
backbone for much of the smart city infrastructure.
As more of the world's population moves into cities, we will do our best to expose the innovations
making cities smarter and the lives of city residents
healthier, safer and easier.
