Tech on
the Horizon
We are on the threshold of advances set to transform businesses
and the global economy. CES 2019 provided a glimpse of some
of the disruptive technologies that are profoundly changing
lives. In this issue, we look at 5G tech that was the talk of the
show in multiple sessions. During the keynote from Verizon
CEO Hans Vestberg, he explained the "currencies" of 5G that
will blend physical and digital worlds using the Internet of
Things, augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence
(AI), self-driving vehicles, advanced robotics, 3D printing and
wearable tech. 5G will connect millions more devices to the
internet and promises to dramatically increase download
speeds while providing a host of new services to consumers.

rone technology - including
Bell Nexus' vehicle that was
half-helicopter, half drone -
is integrating new imaging
sensors, aerial imaging, geofencing and
computer vision to create enhancements in transportation, delivery and
safety. And the latest vehicle tech at
CES included self-driving cars, electrified and connected cars, infotainment,
telematics, user interfaces and even a
prototype of a walking car. We break it
down by automaker in our coverage.
This year, CES also featured the first
Resilience Marketplace. According to
Dr. Carmichael Roberts, founding partner of Material Impact and serial entrepreneur, resilience touches on the big
issues of keeping the world healthy,
warm, safe, fed, secure and powered. .
We also look at how Estonia, the
world's first smart city, is providing a
blueprint for others to follow. This digitally connected city includes Wi-Fi
everywhere, providing seamless services for its citizens. Robotics are
enabling delivery services in smart cities: In fact, McKinsey predicts that selfdriving vehicles and delivery bots will
make up 85 percent of last-mile deliveries by 2025. And CTA expects the
U.S. home robotics market will exceed

$1.4 billion (wholesale) annually by 2022.
We also look at how trade is impacting American farmers with i3's interview
of Brian Kuehle, who heads up Farmers
for Free Trade and how Vietnam provides a potentially lucrative alternative
to manufacturing. Also check out CTA's
U.S. Consumer Technology Sales &
Forecasts, which shows a healthy market as consumers continue to upgrade
to 4K UHD TVs and stream native 4K
video content. With 6.2 percent growth
last year, 2019 revenue is expected to
reach $300.9 billion, a 2.8 percent
growth rate. See our coverage in
