Editor's Note

Honoring
20 Years of
Innovation
On November 6, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of
CTA's Hall of Fame program. We will honor an impressive class
of leaders at the annual dinner to be held at SIR Stage37 in
New York City. And for the first time, we also are recognizing
the Innovation Entrepreneur Award winners, Aurora, startup
of the year and Heal, small business of the year.

 T

he 2019 class includes Colin
Angle who invented the
Roomba robotic vacuum,
founded iRobot and created
military robots that have saved many
lives; Jim Barry, a distinguished journalist and editor who also served as CTA's
Digital Answer Man for 22 years; Henry
Chiarelli, a leading executive at top CT
companies beginning with RadioShack,
who served on numerous industry
boards including CTA and mentored
many; Elizabeth Feinler, an internet
pioneer who led the ARPANET Network
Information Center, the pre-historic
Google; Dr. Shuji Nakamura who
invented the blue LED for color flatscreen displays, and also the blue laser
diode for Blu-ray; and Owen Young
who founded RCA in 1919 becoming
the leading seller of radios, phonograph
players and records. These leaders
helped to shape the consumer tech
world. See their bios on page 31.
Our cover story profiles Meg
Whitman, CEO of startup Quibi who

along with Founder Jeffrey Katzenberg
is leading the new streaming service
designed for mobile devices. Famous
filmmakers like Steven Spielberg,
Steven Soderbergh and Antoine Fuqua
are producing original content aimed
at millennials that is capped at 10 minutes. Whitman explains why this will be
a game-changer.
This pre-CES issue also looks at the
massive changes in tech including
sensors in vehicles that can monitor
passenger's health, 5G, biometrics and
the intersection of travel and tech that
is improving traveler's experiences.
We also look at how the trade war is
impacting one small business. To see
the latest innovations, join us at CES
2020, January 7-10. Please send comments to cstevens@CTA.tech.
