that problems at work are more strongly associated with health
complaints than are financial or family problems. And in a 201
study of 2,000 professionals by the consulting firm orn Ferry,
nearly two-thirds of them said their work stress levels were higher
than they were five years ago.
The demands that characterize the modern work world may
contribute to a host of long-term health issues. When a tight
deadline, annoyed boss, irritated customer, or angry email pops
up, your brain responds with the same physiological reaction it
would have cued when being chased by a predator thousands
of years ago. The nervous system goes on high alert and stress
hormones like adrenaline and cortisol begin to flow, preparing
your body to run away from the threat or fight back.
Q&A
Three Questions for
Brenda Yang
A stressful environment doesn't exactly help productivity, either.
Instead, stressed-out employees suffer higher rates of illness,
injury, absenteeism, and turnover - costing US employers billions
of dollars annually.
Brenda Yang is Rally's chief operating
officer, overseeing company-wide
operations, driving strategy and
company performance overall.
You have to put on your own

you run out of air, you can't help
anyone else.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVO R ITE
WAY TO DE -S TR ESS?
Women may feel more stress than men because of family
obligations, including taking care of children and or aging parents.
They often spend more time taking care of others rather than
meeting their own needs. But as we become more aware of the
mental and physical havoc stress wreaks, health professionals
increasingly remind us of the airplane metaphor: You have to put
on your own oxygen mask first - because if you run out of air,
you can't help anyone else. Similarly, if you don't take care of
yourself, you won't be able to care for your family if you become
burned out.

A: There's nothing like a good run to
clear your mind, and I like spending
time outdoors with my family. I also
meditate at least 10 minutes a day.
There are some great apps for
that now.
FLU SH OT -
Y ES O R N O?
A: Definitely yes. It's such an
important way to keep me and my
family healthy during flu season.
WHAT AR E YOUR
2020 GOAL S?
A: Help even more people engage
with the health care system in the
easiest way possible. On a personal
level, travel is one of my passions,
so I'm hoping to find time to explore
new places with my family.
