hen COVID-19 was first identified in
December, no one, not even the World
Health Organization (WHO), could have anticipated
that the virus would set off an international health
crisis, prompting businesses both large and small to
rethink their very survival. As most industries went
into crisis mode during subsequent lockdowns, quarantines and a historic financial downturn, the tech
industry found itself in a unique position to reexamine the way it not only makes but also shares its connected tools and services.
"The tech world, in particular the 3D printing
space, is uniquely capable of iterating and innovating
at an exceptionally fast pace," says Gaurav
Manchanda, Formlabs Director of Healthcare in
Somerville, MA. "Because modern technology is

capable of supporting an unprecedented level of innovation, it's
essential for companies that have the resources to step up and
join the health care industry in this fight against COVID-19."
Manchanda and others in the 3D printing space discovered that as the virus continued to spread worldwide, essentially putting a pause in manufacturing hubs like China, the
supply of medical devices was not meeting the demand, particularly in hot spots where the most critical cases were escalating rapidly.
"The supply chains from where these materials are traditionally manufactured have been significantly disrupted," says
Manchanda, "leading health care and technology professionals
to turn to 3D printing to explore novel stopgap solutions and
produce validated solutions in-house."
That inspired Formlabs and others to step in to offer help,
creating, testing and redesigning new diagnostic tools in
