ollaborative robots are working with humans
on production lines, in laboratories, warehouses and retail settings, with machines and people
each handling the tasks that they do most efficiently
and safely.
Meanwhile, companion and social robots are helping and entertaining humans in many situations,
including interactive pets and health care assistance.
Together, these two types of "cobots" are forging new
perceptions about how automated and interactivated
devices are reshaping human-machine relationships
for business and pleasure, and sometimes for both.
What they have in common is a growing reliance on
artificial intelligence (AI) to "train" the machine plus
flexible customization that enables tasks beyond what
mere robots - or mortals - can accomplish.

The two breeds of cobots also have few physical
resemblances. In industrial settings, the device may
only be a robot arm or a specialized form that works
with a human partner. Consumer cobots can take the
shape of an animal pet or a humanoid health caregiver. In the case of assistive devices such as exoskeletons, customized cobots can enable warehouse or
airport baggage handlers to lift heavy objects or allow
disabled individuals to stand or walk.
Whether the cobots look like anthropomorphic
humanoids, biomorphic drones (devices that
duplicate the behavior of bees), cuddlesome toys
or another industrial or utilitarian form, this
emerging generation of automatons and flexible
mechanisms is becoming part of a new work and
social ecosystem.
