In fact, U.S. Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines
allow 10 percent of daily calories to come from added sugar.
While sugar is found naturally in some foods like milk and
fruit, it is added to many others and can pile up across meals.
About 70 percent of Americans take in more added sugar
than recommended daily. Avoid secretly sweetened foods
and curb your sugar cravings with these tips:
■ Look at the label. Since sugar has many names, read
beyond the nutrition facts. Check the ingredients for added
sugar under other names such as corn syrup, fruit juice
concentrates and molasses, especially in food products that
are notoriously sweet such as cereal and sauce.
■ Cook creatively.
When baking, use
unsweetened applesauce
in place of sugar. Instead
of sweeteners, add flavor
with spices like ginger,
cinnamon and nutmeg,
or extracts like almond,
vanilla or lemon.
■ Try a substitute.
Achieve sweetness with
a sugar substitute. Look
for replacements with
FDA-approved ingredients
such as saccharin,
aspartame, acesulfame
potassium and sucralose.
