ut, scrape, scratch, blister or bite.
Everyone has experienced some type of
wound. For most of us, wounds are tempo-

rary and heal within days. But for others, a wound
can remain unhealed for many weeks, leading to
infection and, in severe cases, amputation.
"Nonhealing wounds are wounds that haven't
begun to heal after two weeks or aren't completely
healed in four weeks," says William Anthony, MD,
clinical assistant professor of medicine at the
University of Maryland School of Medicine and
medical director of the Wound Healing Center at
the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)
Midtown Campus. "Any wound has the potential
to become nonhealing, but you're more likely to
develop a nonhealing wound if you have an existing
medical condition such as diabetes, kidney failure,
high blood pressure or circulation problems."
While every wound is different, nonhealing
wounds typically include signs such as increasing
or persistent pain, discoloration near the edges of
the wound, redness and warmth, increased drainage and a foul odor. "If you experience any of these
symptoms, you should see your primary care doctor
immediately," says Dr. Anthony. "They can assess the
wound and refer you to a specialist who is certified
to care for your wounds."
