"The new pain management protocol
allows us to minimize the use of narcotics
and decrease complications like nausea,
constipation, respiratory distress and
sedation, all things that interfere with postsurgery rehabilitation and recovery," says
Mary Jo Albert, MD, an orthopedic surgeon
affiliated with Gwinnett Medical Center.
Addiction is another concern when
administering narcotics. "We're still giving
them when necessary, but now, fortunately,
less of these types of medication are
needed," Dr. Albert says.
With this regimen, people are often able
to go home the day of surgery or the day
after, and begin rehabilitation just as quickly.

Knee replacement recovery continues to
evolve as newer pain management strategies
are helping people decrease both pain and
recovery time. These new methods rely less
on medications while facilitating a quicker
return to activities, according to a literature
review in the Journal of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Traditional pain management relied on
oral and intravenous narcotics that cause
side effects such as vomiting, urinary
retention and constipation. Now, surgeons
are focusing on a combination of pre- and
postsurgery oral medications, preoperative
nerve blocks and the injection of long-acting
pain relievers directly into the knee tissues
during surgery.
