DEVELOPING RESILIENCE
We can build our strength to face life's challenges

As human beings, we all suffer from the trials and
tribulations of living. Inevitably, each of us will face
challenges or life-changing events-a sudden trauma,
chronic illness or the day-to-day stresses of life. However, we are
equipped with the ability to adapt, endure and even thrive in the
midst of such circumstances. It's called resiliency!
I'm always in awe when I see resiliency-the theme for this
issue-in action throughout the UVA Health System. I see it in the
person who faces a serious diagnosis but remains hopeful; I see it

in the healthcare provider who never loses her passion for careSutton-Wallace
giving despite the dynamics of working in the field of healthcare.
We each have our own strategies for dealing with hardships, but one of the most
important factors in building resilience is having a supportive, caring network of
family, friends and loved ones.
Victoria Cave of Charlottesville has faced an unusual share of challenges. Within a
two-year span, her teenage son and husband both developed life-threatening conditions. Each incident occurred out of the blue, giving Victoria little time to prepare.
Fortunately, she quickly discovered that just across town at UVA, a team of healthcare professionals is always prepared-for any health crisis. Victoria happened to
know one of these professionals, Dr. John Jane Jr., as the father of a student where
she teaches. But in 2014, Victoria also learned that Dr. Jane is an expert at treating
the type of brain tumor her son developed. (Read their full story on page 49.)
Resilience is needed not only when facing a health crisis; it also helps us navigate
the daily stresses of our hurried, busy lives. UVA primary care physician Dr. John
Schorling is an expert on dealing with stress that, left unchecked, can be detrimental to our physical and emotional well-being. The secret is mindfulness. Don't miss
Dr. Schorling's 10 tips for using mindfulness to reducing stress on page 6.
We hope the articles in this issue provide the encouragement and knowledge
you need to endure what may appear to be unendurable. Whether you rely on a
network of loving supporters and healthcare professionals, use breathing techniques for mindful meditation or look to your faith for comfort and peace, you'll
find strength and resolve to overcome whatever life brings your way!
