It can be hard to resist-you drive up, order, and a few minutes and dollars
later, you have a hot, tasty meal. It's no wonder that the fast-food drive-thru
options are everywhere and thriving. In 2017, Americans were projected to spend
more than $200 billion at fast-food restaurants-up from $6 billion in 1970.
Let's back up and consider the true cost of fast food to our health.
Children who eat three or more servings of fast food each week are more
likely to have asthma or be obese, Harvard public health researchers have found.
While restaurants are increasingly offering healthier items, prepared food
tends to be high in calories, sodium, processed ingredients (lacking fiber) and
unhealthy fats.
On the flip side, eating homemade meals is a great way to avoid one of the
most common diseases-type 2 diabetes. People who ate two homemade meals
each day had a 13 percent lower risk of getting diabetes, compared with those
who had fewer than six homemade meals each week,
according to research from Harvard T.H. Chan
School of Public Health that, over 36 years, looked at
lunch and dinner habits of 99,000 men and women.
Pulling together a healthy, nutrient-rich meal every
day is no easy feat. Freezer meals and slow-cooker
dinners are great alternatives to eating out or relying on prepacked foods, says UVA dietitian Katherine
Basbaum. For today's busy family, she adds, the
latest option is a meal delivery service that lets you
skip the meal planning and grocery shopping. ■
