About Hydration

Drinking plenty of water is important
for everyone, as hydration supports
digestion, prevents fatigue and soothes
joint pain. Expectant moms should be
prepared to drink more than 60 ounces
of water daily. If you plan to be outside,
make sure to add 8 ounces for each hour
spent in the sunshine.
The good news is that you don't have
to stick to plain water all day, every
day. There are plenty of ways to stay
hydrated with fresh fruit, juices and
even smoothies.
To infuse your water with something
delicious and nutritious, try adding kiwi,
blueberries or grapefruit-excellent
sources of vitamins

and nutrients. Similarly, juices can be
a great way to enjoy refreshing flavors
and get a nutritious boost. Stick to
100 percent juice, and try options like
orange, prune and grapefruit. Get
creative and try combining fresh juices,
fruit and herbs into a cool smoothie
that's totally unique.

SOOTHE Your Swelling
Swelling may be a normal part of
pregnancy, but that doesn't make
it any more comfortable. Many
expectant moms will experience
swelling throughout their bodies,
including hands, faces, legs, ankles
and feet.

One of the best ways to reduce
swelling and inflammation is to cut
out excess sodium in your diet. Keep
in mind that iodide is essential to the
health of your baby, so don't cut it out
completely. Instead, try incorporating
more herbs and spices to add flavor.
To ensure comfort despite swelling,
be mindful of your hands and feet,
the most common places moms-to-be
experience swelling. Make sure to
remove your rings at the first signs of
swelling so they don't get stuck. For
feet, take a load off and keep your feet
elevated to help improve blood flow
and decrease swelling. When you are
on your feet, make sure to choose a
supportive shoe, as this will keep your
feet comfortable and prevent further
soreness. This means no flip-flops.

It isn't just the warm temps of summer
that leave moms-to-be feeling hot.
With extra blood flow, higher internal
temperatures and extra poundage
from your little bundle(s) of joy, it's no
wonder getting cool may feel impossible.
But with swimming season in full
swing, finding a nice pool or body
of water shouldn't be too hard. Not
only is this a great way to cool off, but
swimming also helps to relieve pressure
on your spine and reduce discomfort.
But don't forget the SPF when you head
out for an afternoon dip, as the sun
can boost melanin production, leading
to skin pigmentation and sunburn.
Plan to go out earlier in the morning,
when temperatures are lower. If you
need a quick cool-down, try putting
a damp washcloth on your neck or
forehead. And the perfect activity for
your afternoon-a long nap. Be sure to
snuggle up on your left side to promote
the circulation of blood and nutrients
to your placenta.
