LITTLE TWEAKS ADD UP
Small changes in habits and outlook can have a big
impact on your health

As another year draws to a close, you may be
thinking about making an ambitious New Year's
resolution. To help good intentions reach fruition,
I have found it helpful to focus on making small changes,
thinking long term and staying positive.
Small changes-the theme for this issue-are more likely to
become lifelong habits when they happen gradually. As Beth
Frackleton, RN, a UVA certified health and wellness coach, tells
us on page 3, "If you can figure out how to seamlessly incorPamela

stick with it." One idea in this issue that I love is starting your day
with salmon instead of bacon or sausage. You'll swap out an artery-clogging fat for a
healthy one. As a child, I remember my mom making salmon cakes for breakfast with
a healthy dose of scrambled eggs. Not just a Southern classic, this dish is also a good
source of protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Tweaking your daily routine-and outlook-can have a profound impact on your
health, especially if, like Angela Hurt, you're facing a chronic illness. Angela has a rare
autoimmune disorder that requires taking up to 20 pills a day and following up consistently with a team of UVA specialists. Her disease almost destroyed her kidneys, but
her doctors were able to save one and keep her from a lifetime of dialysis. Her kidney
expert, Mark Okusa, MD, credits much of Angela's progress to "her healthy lifestyle
and her upbeat attitude." (See her story on page 6.)
Beyond the physical and emotional demands of living with a chronic illness such
as Angela's, the logistics of managing a disease-the medical bills, prescription refills
and appointment scheduling-can also be stressful. Fortunately, technology is helping simplify the patient experience. For Angela, using MyChart® has made all the
difference. It gives her secure and private access to her online health record. And
recent upgrades make paying bills easier. "It's made it much easier for me to stay on
top of my care," Angela says.
With her husband and a team of medical experts supporting her, Angela remarkably says her illness is the "best thing that's ever happened to me." Let Angela's attitude be an inspiration. Look for the good even in hardship. You'll be surprised how
different you'll feel if you take time each day to be grateful. It can be for something
significant or even something small-like, for me, the memory of waking up to my
mom's salmon cakes.
