Macular Degeneration
University of Virginia researchers have discovered a critical
trigger for the damaging inflammation that ultimately robs
millions of their sight. The finding may allow doctors to halt
the inflammation early on, potentially saving older adults
from blindness caused by macular degeneration. "Almost
200 million people in the world have macular degeneration. If macular degeneration were a country, it would
be the eighth most populated nation in the world. That's
how large a problem this is," says Jayakrishna Ambati, MD,
vice chairman for research of the UVA Department of
Ophthalmology and founding director of the UVA Center
for Advanced Vision Science. The research findings are
promising because they identify a single enzyme that seems
to set off an "overdrive of inflammation" that damages the
cells in the eye's macula, which leads to blurred or reduced
central vision, limiting the ability to perform important daily
tasks such as reading, writing, recognizing faces or driving.

guidelines for high blood pressure mean
1 in 2 Americans have high blood pressure (hypertension), or a pressure reading of
130/80 or higher.
"Even low-level hypertension impacts the
body over time," says UVA Health System cardiologist Brandy
Patterson, MD. "It's called the silent killer because there are
few symptoms, but elevated blood pressure over an extended
period can cause significant damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes and more."
If your blood pressure is 130/80 or higher, your healthcare
provider may recommend taking a more proactive approach to
lowering your numbers. Your provider may initially recommend
lifestyle changes, including increased exercise and a diet low in
sodium and saturated fat. If your blood pressure is significantly
higher than normal, or if you have other health conditions, you
may be prescribed medication to keep your blood pressure
in check.
