My daughters are big fans of the celebrity on
this issue's cover, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
OK-actually-that's me who's the fan! He is
one of the hardest-working movie actors, rarely takes a day
off from his grueling exercise routine and, when preparing
for roles like Hercules, works out twice a day. While very
few of us need to, or can, maintain such an extreme level of
fitness, we can all benefit from strength building. It offers
many rewards and, fortunately, doesn't require a huge

investment in time or money.

The human body is designed to move. Exercise, in many
ways, is more powerful than prescription medicine: Besides building strong bones,
it helps us maintain our blood pressure, regulate insulin and even perform at our
cognitive and emotional best. Strengthening our balance-maintaining muscles can
help us avoid devastating falls that too often happen among those over 65. See
page 3 for simple and no-cost ways to improve your balance. Also discover (on
page 13) how much protein you need (and the healthiest sources) to build and
maintain muscle based on your size.
Like The Rock, all of us at UVA Health System are driven to function at the

Most of us will never achieve the physique of The Rock, but we can enjoy the
health benefits of strength training and a workout routine. Always consult with your
provider about the best activity level for you. And be sure to reward your efforts,
no matter how big or small. And maybe even follow The Rock's advice: "Wake up
determined. Go to bed satisfied. And somewhere in between, eat a cookie."
