Consistency and longevity are two important factors that impact
how much you gain from working out. While you have to stick to a
routine in order to see results, that very exercise may also be spurring on
issues, like plateauing or fatigue. So how do you know when it's time to
find something new?

NAGGING INJURIES OR CONSISTENT SORENESS THAT WON'T
GO AWAY Most of us are creatures of habit. So when you find an exercise
that works, why mess with a good thing? "However, if you're doing a lot of
high-intensity exercises over and over, with minimal breaks, you may experience
joint pain or injuries from repetition and overuse," explains Robert Wood, MD,
a fellowship-trained total joint replacement surgeon affiliated with Gwinnett
Medical Center.

BODY IMBALANCE When you exercise frequently, your body should feel
balanced in endurance and strength. "But if one muscle becomes stronger
than its counterpart, this can put strain on joints and lead to injury," adds
Dr. Wood.

CHANGES IN YOUR MOOD One of the benefits exercise offers is
endorphins, which support mental health. However, you can have too
much of a good thing. Overtraining can cause you to experience mental
fatigue and even depression, due to prolonged stress on the adrenal glands and
central nervous system. ■

problem that athletes of
all shapes, sizes and levels
of experience face. When

A rare, but possible, risk from overworking
your muscles is called exertional rhabdomyolysis
(rhabdo). This condition occurs after muscle
fibers are overworked and toxic contents are
released into the bloodstream, increasing the
risk of kidney complications. Mild cases involve
muscle aches over a long period of time.
A significant indicator of rhabdo is being
excessively sore after your workout, and for
more than three days. Non-muscle-related
symptoms include abdominal pain, fever and
abnormal urine.
"Remember, though, some post-workout
soreness is normal," says Dr. Wood. "Plus,
low-impact exercise should help with reducing
inflammation and lactic acid, as well as alleviating
joint stiffness and muscle discomfort."
