Does Parkinson's
Start from the
Appendix?
Researchers exploring the connection
between the brain and the gut found that
having your appendix removed early in
life lowers risk for Parkinson's disease.
They're just not sure why.
In the tube-shaped pouch, scientists
found a lot of the protein thought to
be toxic to brain cells of people with
Parkinson's, according to a study in Science
Translational Medicine.
Researchers examined records spanning
50 years for 1.7 million people. Those who
had surgery to remove their appendixes
had a 19 percent lower risk of Parkinson's.
In appendix-less people who did develop
Parkinson's, the disease showed up about
3 ½ years later than it did in people with
an appendix.
Because the protein also was found in
healthy people's appendixes, researchers still
are trying to understand the link. They want
to know: What is it about the appendix that
might favor Parkinson's development?

INTERVAL
TRAINING
Interval training means you mix bursts of high-intensity activity with
short periods of rest or less intense exercise. Interval-training methods have varied names, such as HIIT (high-intensity interval training),
Tabata and fartlek.
The length of the intense parts versus recovery periods varies widely.
A workout might consist of 20 seconds "on" and then 10 seconds of
rest, for example, or three minutes "on" and an equal period of rest.
Interval training works for a wide variety of exercises, including running, walking, biking, lunges, jumping jacks and pushups.
Spurts of maximum effort rev up calorie burn during workouts and
for hours after. In short: Your body burns more calories in less time.
