FIBROIDS

If you've received this common diagnosis, there is
no need for alarm. Here's what to know about
these uterine growths
Fibroids, also called leiomyomas or
myomas, are noncancerous growths in
the uterus. Although the word "growth"
can be scary, it's important to know that
fibroids often don't require treatment.

And if your doctor spots a fibroid-they're
typically found on an ultrasound or during a
pelvic exam-know that you've got company.
The National Institutes of Health reports
that by age 50, as many as 70 to 80 percent of
women will develop fibroids.
"They're super, super common, and most
of the time you can leave them alone," says
Anat Zelmanovich, MD, an OB-GYN and member of the American Board of Obstetrics and
Gynecology. Here is what the experts know
