heart problems, but treatments can help keep
people safe."
Cardiovascular genetic testing usually
costs $100 or less. "It's a personal decision
to have genetic testing for a potentially
serious but treatable condition running in
your family," Thomas says. "We take great
care and pride in helping people make the
best decision to protect themselves and
their children."

Most heart disease is preventable with a
healthy lifestyle. But at least 1.3 million
Americans have an inherited heart or vascular disease. "Inherited heart conditions
aren't those caused by a poor diet or lack of
exercise. They happen when a person is born
with a gene that causes heart or blood vessel
problems," says Matt Thomas, a University
of Virginia Health System genetic counselor.
At the UVA Cardiovascular Genetics
Program, we focus on heart diseases that run
in families. "Most inherited heart conditions
don't have obvious symptoms that you can
feel, so knowing your family history is key,"
Thomas says. "Once one person in a family
