After surgery to treat her uterine cancer, Brown had six chemotherapy and
25 radiation therapy sessions, all at
facilities within 10 miles of her home
and under the supervision of the oncology team at UVA Cancer Center. "Dr.
Susan Modesitt from UVA was in charge
of my care plan after the surgery,"
Brown says. "When she told us I would
need chemotherapy and radiation, I was
so relieved when I found out I wouldn't
have to go over the mountain. I had
chemotherapy at UVA Cancer Center
Augusta and radiation at Augusta
Health-both a straight shot from our
house. It saved me time, energy, dollars
and emotional strain during that time."
It also meant Brown could have the
two men she loved most by her side for
support. "My dad was 88 at the time of
my diagnosis," she says. "He was devastated. I am an only child. It meant
so much to him and to me that he was
able to be there with my husband and so
many family and friends."
Brown is in complete remission.
She has an annual follow-up appointment with her oncologist, Nicholas
Paphitis, MD, one of the few people who
knows the stage of Brown's cancer when
she was initially diagnosed. "My husband and I never told anyone. I didn't
want to speak of or hold onto anything
negative along the way," she says. "I
went to my five-year appointment with
Dr. P, and it was so hard because Jack
and I were going to celebrate, but I am
truly blessed." ■
