As the afternoon approached, it was
time to go pick up his wife, Leanne,
from her job cutting hair. That's when
he began to notice a slight pain in his
back. "It just felt like I tweaked my
back," Jerry recalls, "so I shrugged it off
and went to pick up Leanne."
It wasn't until he returned with his
wife that Jerry became concerned. "It
just kept getting worse and worse. I
decided to lie down in bed, and within
20 minutes I was begging my wife to
take me to the hospital. It felt like a car
was sitting on my back."
As it turns out, Jerry had a rare tumor
on his spine that had ruptured and was

causing internal hemorrhaging. He was
immediately admitted into surgery.

Another Setback

As surgeons rushed to cauterize the
ruptured tumor, Jerry suffered yet
another setback. "During the surgery, I
remember feeling this big shock in my
chest. I found out later it was a stroke in
my spinal cord."
Known as a spinal cord infarction,
the stroke left Jerry paralyzed from the
waist down and nearly took his life. "I
remember wondering how something
like this could have happened to me.
I was healthy my whole life and then

Many people may remember
October 27, 2018, as an
ordinary day when they
watched football or prepared for
Halloween festivities. Others may not
remember it at all-it was just another
day, faded into the memory banks along
with a thousand other days. But for
Jerry Chapman and his family, October
27 is a day that will never be forgotten.
The day began like any other Saturday
for Jerry. At 60, he had worked as a
plumber for more than 40 years and
enjoyed filling his weekends with family
time and the occasional ride on his
Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
