Maybe you've had surgery before.
Odds are, you learned something
then that might make the next
time easier.
For example, if previous experience has shown you that anesthesia makes you sick, let your
doctors know ahead of time. Just
because you vomited after your
last surgery doesn't mean you
have to endure it this time.
"Now, there are medications
that the anesthesiologist gives
prior to putting the patient
asleep that can decrease nausea
and vomiting," Daly says. "It's
critical to talk about any prior
surgeries that have been conducted to see how the patient
did through the operation and
whether there were any complications or issues that arose."
MANAGING PAIN SAFELY
For many people, the most frightening part of surgery is the prospect of pain
afterward. Many of the drugs traditionally used to manage that pain are addictive and often abused.
"We have a growing opioid crisis in this country, and most of those opioids
come from prescriptions that were totally reasonable to prescribe," says Giana
Davidson, MD, MPH, a surgeon and researcher funded by the Patient-Centered
Outcomes Research Institute. "We can't be scared of narcotics, but we have to
do it in a thoughtful way and then taper them off."
Talking about pain management ahead of time is key: Find out what can be
expected from the operation, whether it's reasonable to start with nonopioid
medications and whether your doctor expects that you will need any longacting pain medications when you go home.
