WHAT IS ADULT SCOLIOSIS?
Scoliosis doesn't just affect teenagers. According to the American
Association of Neurological Surgeons, scoliosis affects up to 9 million
Americans-many of them adults. Often adults don't have symptoms. But
when they do experience back pain, leg pain, numbness or fatigue, surgery
isn't always necessary. Exercise, medications or steroid injections may help
relieve symptoms.
There are two types of adult scoliosis. Adult idiopathic scoliosis is
progression of a spinal curvature that began in the teenage years. The
cause is not known, and this condition can progress as discs degenerate or
as arthritis or bone spurs develop. The second and most common type is
adult degenerative scoliosis, caused by deterioration of the discs and
arthritis damage.
"With the aging population, we are seeing more and more patients with
degenerative spine disease-including scoliosis, and sagittal plane malalignment," says UVA neurosurgeon Chun-Po Yen, MD. "At UVA, we have been
doing complex spine surgeries for more than two decades. We have treated
patients from all over the country who benefit from our experience and a
strong research background."
