As experts
imagine a
future without
cervical cancer,
other HPVrelated cancers
are on the rise

Brian Hill was 49 years old when he was
diagnosed with stage 4 oropharyngeal
squamous cell carcinoma-cancer of the
throat, specifically the part of the throat at the
back of the mouth.
It was 1997. Hill had never smoked and
didn't drink alcohol-two main risk factors for
this type of cancer-and, at the time, neither
he nor his doctors understood that the human
papillomavirus, the most common sexually
transmitted virus, could cause throat cancer.
"Even the best medical institutions were
calling my cancer an unknown," says Hill,
who is founder and executive director of the
Oral Cancer Foundation. "They really didn't
know the origin of it."
Much has changed since then. People generally understand that HPV causes cervical cancer
in women. But many still don't know that HPV
can lead to five other types of cancer, including
cancers of the back of the throat, like Hill's, as
well as anal, vulvar, penile and vaginal cancers.
