You've probably heard of helicopter parents, a phenomenon describing parents who hover over their kids and
try to protect them at every turn. But have you heard of
helicopter children? It's a more recent phrase describing-well, is
it describing you?
If you're overprotective of your aging parents to the point you're
overstepping your bounds, you could be a helicopter child.
"When you're concerned about your aging parents, your tendency is to want to limit them," says Amy Goyer, a family and
caregiving expert for AARP. "We have to respect our parents and
give them the ability to make their own decisions."
The next time you mutter something about parenting your parents, Goyer suggests flipping the script. "Our parents will always
be our parents," she says. As we care for them during health crises
or cognitive decline, it's also important to treat them like adults.
