PROTECT YOURSELF
FROM THESE SIGNS OF
THE SUNNY SEASON
BY AMY MOTTERAM

As the summer months approach,
Georgians are gearing up for days at
the pool, nights watching fireworks
and weeks away for family vacation. What they
are not planning for are urgent visits to the
doctor's office or emergency department.
To minimize your risk of needing one
of these visits, we've asked the experts
at Northside Hospital for their best tips to
prevent some of the most common summertime ailments and injuries. *

Colds

Swimmer's Ear

If you're at the pool and one of your kids
starts complaining about his ear, it might be
swimmer's ear, an infection that occurs when
water stays in the outer ear canal. Between
all of the germs in a pool and a small,
damp ear canal, it's the perfect recipe for
bacteria growth.
Jean Song, MD, a pediatrician at Northside's
Mason Pediatrics, says typical symptoms
include itchiness in the ear, redness and swelling in the ear canal, and pain when tugging on
the ear or if pressure is put on the ear.
A trip to the doctor's office can help prevent
a more serious infection. Your pediatrician can
make sure your child gets the right antibiotics.
To prevent swimmer's ear, keep the ears
as dry as possible and be sure to dry them out
after they get wet.

When you think of colds, you probably think of fall and winter, but did you know
you can easily catch a cold in the summer, too? The main difference between
a summer cold and a winter cold is the type of virus you catch.
Typical symptoms of a summer cold include a dry cough, nasal congestion,
exhaustion, muscle aches and ear pressure. Antibiotics will not treat a cold
because it's caused by a virus and not bacteria, but you can treat the symptoms
so you don't feel miserable.
It's important to drink water to stay hydrated. You can also take decongestants to help relieve nasal congestion and anti-inflammatory medications
(such as aspirin or ibuprofen) to help with fever and muscle aches. In the
end, you will just have to let the cold run its course.
If your symptoms do not improve after 10 days, follow up with your doctor.
