etting a good night's sleep is critically
important. Not only does it help you feel
well-rested each day, but it also gives your brain
and body the necessary downtime to recover.
As you sleep, your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate lower and your body
releases hormones that help repair cells and
control how your body uses energy.
"When we sleep, we're restoring, and we're
cleaning waste from our body," says Lourdes
DelRosso, MD, a member of the World Sleep
Society's speakers bureau.
Yet millions of Americans don't get at least
seven hours of sleep a night on a regular
basis, which is the minimum recommended
for most adults. In fact, some 70 million
Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
Lack of sleep can have a big effect on people's health and well-being, as it's associated
with chronic diseases, injuries, mental illness,
poor quality of life, increased healthcare costs
and lost work productivity, the CDC says.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint, affecting as many as 30 to 35 percent of
adults, according to the American Academy
of Sleep Medicine. It occurs when you have
difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or you
get up too early.
Symptoms include fatigue, difficulty
concentrating, irritability, daytime sleepiness, lack of energy and-this one is
frightening-accidents.
Insomnia can be caused by stress; health
conditions such as pregnancy or menopause;
mental health issues such as depression and
anxiety; medication or substance use; and
environmental factors such as noise, light and
extreme temperatures.
If you've had insomnia for fewer than three
months, first try to practice good sleep habits,
