7 REASONS TO QUIT YOUR SODA HABIT

Whether you call it soda, pop or
the all-encompassing "coke," one
thing is always true about this
beverage: It has almost no redeeming qualities
(it does taste good, we'll admit).
But if you're used to having one or more of
these sugar-sweetened drinks a day, it can be
a hard habit to break.
"It's quite addictive," says Sandra
Christensen, a board-certified nurse practitioner and trustee of the Obesity Medicine
Association. "Humans are hard-wired to like
the sweet taste, so once people get started on
it, it's very difficult to stop."
Still, health experts say it's incredibly
important to curb your soda consumption.
"It's unhealthy, and it contributes to
chronic diseases that are very serious
and could potentially end your life,"
Christensen says.
To stop drinking soda and other
sugary drinks, Christensen suggests
tapering over time rather than
going cold turkey. For example,
if you're drinking three cans of
soda a day, cut back to two a
day for a week or two. Then,
continue cutting back until
you're down to zero.

Soda contributes to
weight gain.

Because sugary beverages
such as soda pack lots of
sugar and calories, frequently
drinking them is associated
with weight gain and obesity, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention. In the U.S., people
consume an average of about
145 calories per day from sugary drinks, the CDC says.
And drinking diet soda
might save you the calories
but drive you to eat more
sugar; artificially sweetened
sodas are even sweeter than
the regular kind, Christensen
says, and can cause intense
sugar cravings.
