disaster, " she says, as it might lead
to overeating.
Booth likes the idea of the family
meal because it gives people an
opportunity to eat more mindfully,
without distractions from television
and video games. " It's also a nice
time to talk and hang out and model
positive eating habits, " she explains.
Booth acknowledges that busy
schedules might preclude daily family
dinners. She urges people to set
realistic goals for these gatherings
and not be so hard on themselves.
" Even if you can have one family
meal on Sundays, for example, that
can make a big diff erence, " she says.
DON'T MAKE FOOD
THE ONLY REWARD
Booth and Walfi sh agree that celebrating
with a treat, such as ice
cream aſt er a good report card,
is acceptable, but they encourage
people to consider other forms of
recognition as well.
" I think food can be a reward,
but it shouldn't always be the only
option, " Booth says. She suggests
letting kids be a part of the decision
and off ering a few age-appropriate
alternatives, such as going to the
toy store to pick out a new game or
taking a hike together.
Another reward could be additional
playtime or " special one-onone
mom or dad time, " which kids
might appreciate even more than a
treat, Walfi sh says.
" Children really benefi t from that
extra interpersonal engagement, "
she says, " even if it's as simple as
playing outside together or taking a
walk, just the two of you. "
AVOID EXTREME
EATING PLANS
Restrictive diets that omit certain
foods usually are problematic.
If your resolve dips and you eat
a forbidden item, it may trigger
feelings of shame and guilt. " You
might say, 'Ugh, I ate that cake,
and now I need to work it off ,' "
Booth says.
And your family notices.
" When kids restrict food, it
can cause malnutrition, stunted
growth, lack of concentration,
memory issues and body image
issues, " Booth says. Down the
road, she adds, it can lead to " disordered
eating, yo-yo dieting and
full-blown eating disorders. "
If you need to limit certain foods
for medical reasons-if you have
celiac disease, for example-you
can still model healthy eating habits.
Don't speak about restricted
foods negatively. Also, don't focus
on what you can't have; instead,
talk about the things you do enjoy.
" Be sure your kids understand that
just because it isn't good for your
body doesn't mean it's not good for
theirs, " Booth says.

As with many aspects of life, our
approach to food should be one
of balance.
" We want people to have a

guilty when they enjoy food and
to gather around a table without
being anxious about what they
are going to eat or if they will
gain weight, " Booth says. " Society
might push the message that
we are what we eat, but we're so
much more than that. We should
connect with the values, abilities
and talents that make us beautiful
humans rather than be obsessed
with how we look and what we
are eating. " *
