Th e fi rst year of a baby's
life can be a whirlwind of
never-ending tasks: Wash
the bottles, launder the sleep sacks,
track the wet diapers ...
So forgive us for adding to your
list, but this one is fun: Stop and play
with the baby. When babies play,
experts say, they form the beginnings
of language, motor skills and
socialization-skills that will serve
them throughout their lives. Play also
strengthens the sense of safety that
parents and caregivers can create for
the newest people on our planet.

of Pediatrics' 2018 clinical report

So how can you play with a baby
who can't yet kick a ball or put
together a puzzle? Yogman says in
the early stages of a child's life, the
simplest games are best.

Smile and Babble Back
Baby's fi rst smile is magical,
all gums, slobber and joy. When
you see your baby smiling or making
funny faces, smile and make
funny faces back. When she coos
or babbles, coo and babble back.
Mirroring your baby teaches her
about social cues and builds her
connection with you.

Tackle Tummy Time
Tummy time helps strengthen
tiny bodies and can help prevent
fl at spots from forming on the back
of a baby's head. Th e American
Academy of Pediatrics recommends
starting the day that you come
home from the hospital, for a few
minutes at a time, a few times per
day. Try putting your baby on a
towel or playmat and lie in front of
him, facing and encouraging him.
