Men: Erectile dysfunction can be a sign
of heart disease. Fortunately, there
are proven solutions BY KELLY CASEY

As many as 30 million men in the
U.S. have varying degrees of ED.
Also known as impotence, ED is
the inability to attain or maintain
an erection of the penis that is firm
enough for sexual intercourse.
" As a warning sign of future
cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction should prompt men to go
to a physician to have their blood
pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels checked and treated, "
Dr. Smith says.

BEWARE OF UNPROVEN
TREATMENTS

Because ED is such a prevalent disease, drug manufacturers often try
to capitalize on men who are desperate for a solution. Dr. Smith cautions

against taking any supplement that
isn't recommended by a physician.
The Food and Drug Administration
in recent years has pulled supplements off the market after men
experienced adverse side effects.
Dr. Smith also cautions against
paying for treatments whose safety
and effectiveness have yet to be
proved by research. Men should only
pursue investigative treatments-
including shockwave therapy (see
" Clinical Trial " )-as part of a closely
monitored study, Dr. Smith says.
The last breakthrough in ED
treatment came in the late 1990s
when medications became widely
available and advertised.
" The pills which treat erectile
dysfunction all work in a similar

diabetes, heart disease, high blood
pressure and high cholesterol-
often have no visible signs. But for
many men, one of the first indications of trouble is frustration in
the bedroom.
" Just as men will develop cardiovascular disease in their peripheral
and coronary arteries, the same
thing is happening in the penile
vascular system. These are small
blood vessels, so even early vascular
disease will begin to cause some
symptoms, " says UVA Health urologist Ryan Smith, MD.
" Erectile dysfunction often
precedes future cardiovascular
morbidity, such as a heart attack, "
Dr. Smith adds.
