Celebrating 10 years of accelerating
cancer research to new heights
O
ne might say it was kismet that brought Jane
Hungerford to the BC
Cancer Foundation over
two decades ago. Shortly after
joining the Foundation's Board of
Directors, Jane learned that her
husband's grandfather, Gordon
Farrell, had been one of the
organization's founding board
members.
But what really motivated
Jane to get involved with the
BC Cancer Foundation was
her mother's cancer diagnosis, followed by the diagnoses of two of Jane's best
friends, one of whom eventually passed away at the
age of 43 from breast cancer.
"I'm a great believer that
timing is everything and found
myself wanting to do something
to help others and also to deal
with my own fear of the 'C' word,"
says Jane.
During her long tenure as a
volunteer with the BC Cancer
Jane Hungerford has supported
the growth of the BC Cancer
Foundation for over 20 years.

PARTNERS IN DISCOVERY
Foundation and BC Cancer Agency,
Jane has worn many different hats:
Board Member, Board Chair, Committee
Member and Co-Chair of the Inspiration
Gala, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
Jane and her husband, George, were
also part of the leadership team that
launched the Foundation's Millennium
Campaign in 1997. It raised $130 million to build a new BC Cancer Agency
Research Centre in Vancouver, establish the BC Cancer Agency's Genome
Sciences Centre and build a research
centre in the BC Cancer Agency's
Vancouver Island Centre in Victoria.
Along the way the Hungerfords also
helped to recruit renowned researchers whose vision has helped establish
the BC Cancer Agency as the worldclass research hub that it is today.
ROOTS OF INSPIRATION
After stepping down from the
Foundation's board in 2001, Jane
decided to organize a premier fundraising event called the Inspiration
Gala with the help of her friend
Jonie Zimmerman.
Through Jonie, Jane met Gloria
Beauchamp, who was in treatment for
breast cancer at the time and agreed
to be honorary chair for the first Gala.
