PARTNERS IN HOPE $6.5 Million Raised to Purchase VERO Technology I n a whirlwind of generosity, BC Cancer Foundation donors responded in record speed to ensure those diagnosed with rare and hardto-treat cancers have the best care available. Their efforts resulted in the purchase of VERO, the most technologically advanced linear accelerator-based radiotherapy delivery system available. VERO will form the basis of a clinical research program at the BC Cancer Agency, which will help to change the standard of care and offer new evidencebased practice that can be shared worldwide. A total of $6.5 million was raised in a matter of months, thanks to people like Letty and Wilkie Sia, who celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary with an online fundraising initiative for VERO. The Sias were inspired by VERO's potential to expand treatment options for British Columbians ... and their passion was infectious. They received an outpouring of support from family and friends, and along with their matching gift raised $80,000. Each year many British Columbians are diagnosed with lung, liver, pancreas, kidney and brain cancers, which represent the most common causes of cancer death worldwide, and are among the most difficult to target and treat. VERO will provide new treatment options for patients with these cancers. After losing a dear friend to brain cancer and receiving his own recent treatments for lymphoma, Hal Kettleson and his wife of 64 years, Anna, were inspired when they read about the need for VERO in the news. They made a $2 million gift to support the acquisition of VERO. The Sias and Kettlesons were a part of an incredible movement of community support. Thousands of people made gifts to bring this exciting new cancer treatment delivery system to British Columbians. Learn more about funds raised for VERO at the signature Hope Couture event on page 6.
